I have had access to a considerable number of unpublished letters, but I have only thought it desirable to print four of them. Information about the localities described by George Eliot has been drawn partly from Mr. Parkinson's useful book, " George Eliot's Country," and partly from personal knowledge. The last chapter of this work was originally published in the Fortnightly Review, nearly in its present form.
